Vol. I — About This Publication
The Editorial Almanac
for Santa Teresa
Independent. Reader-funded. Zero pay-to-play. A guide written by people who moved here and refused to leave.
Not a travel blog. Not a sponsored listicle. An almanac.
Onda Teresa exists because every guide to Santa Teresa we could find was either written by someone passing through on a press trip, or built from affiliate links dressed up as editorial judgment. Neither serves the person actually trying to decide where to eat, where to stay, or whether the surf school is worth the money.
We set out to build the guide we wanted when we first arrived: one that tells you to skip the ceviche at the beachfront restaurant with the great view, and explains exactly why. One that doesn't pretend every business in town is worth your time. One with an actual point of view.
The model is simple. Reader-funded. No advertising in the editorial pages. No sponsored recommendations, ever. Businesses can pay for enhanced directory listings — more photos, more detail, better placement — but nobody buys a good review. The editorial team visits every place we list, and we mean it.
Founded by people who live here. Not people visiting.
Santa Teresa has a particular problem with guides: the people who write them are rarely around long enough to be wrong. A glowing review of a restaurant that changed hands six months ago. A hostel recommendation that doesn't mention the construction next door. A surf guide written from satellite imagery.
We live here. Which means we know when the lunch spot closes for the season, which landlord is worth dealing with for a monthly rental, and which surf school actually teaches instead of just pointing people at the water.
Santa Teresa is still worth finding. We want it to stay that way. The best version of a guide to this place is one that helps the right people find it, and helps everyone find it better.
How this works — and what we will not do
Every listing is visited in person
We do not list businesses we haven't been to. We don't add places based on submissions alone. If we recommend it, someone on the editorial team has eaten there, slept there, paddled there, or sat there long enough to form a real opinion.
Skip It blocks are honest anti-recommendations
The most useful thing a guide can do is tell you what to avoid. Our Skip It entries are not malicious — they reflect what we found when we went. If a place improves, we update. If it closes, we note it. The directory is a living document, not a monument.
Editorial placement is not for sale
Businesses can purchase enhanced directory listings. That means more photos, contact info, hours, and website links. It does not mean a better review, a "Recommended" badge they didn't earn, or priority in the editorial pages. Money changes the listing. It doesn't change the verdict.
Free listings get a name and a verdict. Enhanced listings get everything else.
Every qualifying Santa Teresa business gets a free listing automatically. That means your name, category, and our one-line verdict. We add them when we visit — you don't need to do anything to appear in the directory.
Paid listings unlock a full profile: description, photos, hours, contact info, website and social links. Better discovery for visitors who want detail before they decide. The editorial verdict remains unchanged — Enhanced means more information, not a better score.
The editorial team
We are a small team of writers, editors, and long-term Santa Teresa residents. We are not a travel media company. We are not funded by tourism boards or hotel groups. We keep the masthead anonymous not for drama, but because the work should stand on its own — not on anyone's personal brand.
Corrections, tips, and editorial feedback reach us at editorial@ondateresa.com. We read everything. We respond when we can.
